New Jersey added 3,300 jobs in April, state reports

New Jersey added 3,300 jobs in April, and the unemployment rate declined from 9 percent to 8.7 percent, its lowest level in four years, offering some sign that the state’s economy is improving.
The state added 4,100 private-sector jobs and shed 800 government jobs, according to the monthly jobs report released today by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The state’s unemployment rate remains well above the national rate of 7.5 percent in April.
The report also revised downward the increase of 8,100 jobs previously reported for March, to 7,600. Charles Steindel, chief economist for the New Jersey Department of Treasury, said “the marked decline in unemployment over the last year mainly reflects the ongoing gains in jobs we are experiencing.”
